What is Fit Testing?

Fit testing is a vital process that verifies tight-fitting respirators provide a secure seal, protecting workers from airborne contaminants, dust, fumes, and biological hazards. It confirms that Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is suitable for each individual and functioning correctly, forming an essential part of any workplace respiratory protection programme.

At Fit Test Ireland, we specialise in Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT), a precise, data-driven method that delivers objective, numerical results. Unlike qualitative methods, which rely on subjective judgment, QNFT measures actual particle leakage into the respirator to calculate a Fit Factor, giving you confidence that your staff are properly protected.

Why Quantitative Fit Testing is Essential

  • Precision and Accuracy: Objective, numerical results provide reliable assurance of respirator performance.
  • High-Risk Protection: Mandatory for half-mask and full-face respirators where maximum protection is required.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Fully compliant with HSA regulations and aligned with recognised standards, including HSE INDG 479.
  • Workplace Safety: Confirms respirators perform effectively, reducing exposure risk and supporting a safe work environment.

About Qualitative Fit Testing

Qualitative Fit Testing (QLFT) is a pass/fail method that determines whether a tight-fitting respirator seals correctly using the wearer’s sensory response, such as taste or smell. QLFT is generally used with disposable or reusable half-face respirators in moderate-risk environments where a numerical Fit Factor is not required.

How QLFT Works

01

Sensitivity Screening

The wearer is exposed to a safe test agent without a respirator to ensure they can detect it.

02

Fit Test Procedure

The respirator is worn, and a test hood is placed over the head while the agent (e.g., Bitrex, Saccharin, Isoamyl acetate, or irritant smoke) is released. The wearer performs movements such as talking and turning.

03

Pass/Fail Result

Detection of the agent indicates a failed fit; no detection confirms the respirator fits correctly.

Whether you’re starting a new role, switching respirator models, or renewing your annual test, Fit Test Ireland ensures you meet compliance and protect your health.

Who Needs a Fit Test?

Fit testing is essential for all workers using tight-fitting respirators, including:

FAQ: Your Questions About RPE Fit-Testing Answered
What is fit testing?

Fit testing is a process that ensures a tight-fitting respirator forms an effective seal on the wearer’s face, providing maximum protection against airborne hazards.

Even high-quality respirators can fail if they don’t fit properly. Fit testing ensures workers are protected and helps organisations comply with HSA and HSE regulations.

Fit testing is typically required:

  • When a worker starts a new role requiring respirators
  • If a different respirator model is used
  • Annually, as part of ongoing compliance and safety checks
  • Qualitative: Relies on taste, smell, or irritation to detect leaks; subjective results.
  • Quantitative: Uses specialised equipment to measure particle leakage, providing precise, numerical results (Fit Factor).

Anyone using tight-fitting respirators in high-risk environments, including healthcare workers, construction and engineering personnel, pharmaceutical and cleanroom staff, manufacturing workers, and emergency responders.

Half-mask, full-face, and certain reusable respirators that require a tight seal. Filtering facepieces such as FFP2/FFP3 also require testing.

Typically 20–30 minutes per individual, depending on the respirator type and testing method.

Fit testing ensures the correct respirator model and size is used for each individual. Some individuals may require alternative respirators or PAPR systems if a proper seal cannot be achieved.

If a respirator fails, our team will advise on alternative models or adjustments to achieve a proper fit, ensuring compliance and protection.

Yes. Under Irish law, employers are required to ensure RPE is suitable and properly fitted. Fit testing is a key part of compliance with HSA and HSE regulations.
