The TSI PortaCount is a sophisticated piece of equipment used for quantitative fit testing (QNFT) of respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
Fit testing is essential to ensure that tight-fitting RPE, such as respirators, forms a proper seal on the wearer’s face, providing the intended level of protection. While qualitative fit testing relies on the wearer’s subjective sense of taste or smell to detect leaks, quantitative fit testing like that performed with a PortaCount provides an objective numerical measurement of the respirator’s fit. This measurement is called a “fit factor.”
The PortaCount works by measuring the concentration of microscopic particles both outside and inside the respirator. It then calculates the fit factor by comparing these two measurements. A higher fit factor indicates a better seal and, therefore, better protection.
It provides a numerical fit factor, removing the subjectivity of qualitative tests.
It can be used to test various types of RPE, including disposable respirators, half masks, and full-face masks.
It helps ensure that fit testing meets the requirements of standards and regulations, such as those outlined in INDG479.
At Fit Test Ireland, we utilize the TSI PortaCount to deliver precise and reliable quantitative fit testing services, ensuring the highest level of respiratory protection for your employees.
The PortaCount™ Respirator Fit Tester Model 8048 provides a consistent and objective testing experience across all respirator types, including all N95 filtering facepieces. FitCheck Mode shows in real-time how respirator fit changes throughout donning and adjustment, helping users select the right mask and identify the best fit more quickly. Video animations guide staff through proper fit test exercise movements during a fit test, providing a consistent testing experience and freeing fit test administrators to multitask. Group fit testing allows administrators to test up to four personnel with four PortaCounts simultaneously.
TSI has redesigned every aspect of the PortaCount Fit Tester’s FitPro™ Ultra software. An all new user interface and industry-first features combine to create the most powerful fit test instrument available. From touchscreen tablets to PC laptops, the software is easy to use and similar to applications on your own personal devices.

The TSI PortaCount provides a quantitative measure of respirator fit by precisely measuring the concentration of microscopic particles in the air. Here’s a breakdown of the process:
The PortaCount is a sophisticated particle counter. It draws samples of air and counts the number of airborne particles within that sample. These particles are always present in the ambient air.
Outside the Respirator: The device draws a sample of the ambient air – the air in the environment outside the respirator. This establishes the level of particle concentration that the wearer is exposed to.
Inside the Respirator: Simultaneously, or in rapid succession, the PortaCount draws a sample of the air inside the respirator’s facepiece. This sample is taken via a small tube and probe that’s carefully connected to the respirator.
The core principle is that if the respirator is doing its job and forming a good seal, the number of particles inside the mask should be significantly lower than the number outside. The PortaCount calculates a “fit factor” using this formula:
Fit Factor = (Particle Count Outside) / (Particle Count Inside)
A high fit factor indicates a good fit, meaning fewer particles are leaking into the respirator.
A low fit factor suggests a poor fit and indicates that the respirator is not providing adequate protection.
To simulate real-world working conditions, the person being tested performs a series of exercises (e.g., talking, moving their head, bending over) while the PortaCount takes measurements. This helps to identify any leakage that may occur during movement.
By providing this objective measurement, the PortaCount plays a vital role in ensuring that workers are properly protected in environments where respiratory hazards exist.
